Welcome to our NEW website!

If you had told me five months ago that I’d be writing a blog, I would have laughed at you. If you had told me five years ago, I would have asked “what’s a blog?”. Even now, I can’t think of any blogs I’ve ever read, on any subject. I will admit to using the internet for hours on end, but my expertise is limited to e-mail, Ebay, Youtube, bicycle related sites, news sites, and message boards on a variety of subjects. Beyond that, I know about as much about using a computer as I did when I used to play Pac-Man with my kids. I’m probably a good example of the Atari generation. Used to be pretty good at Pong, and Asteroids, too. Yeah, I know, those are video games, not computers. What’s the difference?
What I’m saying is that I have no preconceived notions about what I’m going to do with all this new-found power, or how often I’m going to do it. The suggestions I’m getting from those close to me usually include writing down some of the best, worst, and most outrageous stories I’ve experienced in 40 years at the Oak Ridge Bicycle Center. I’m not sure those stories will appear here, though. The people and personalities I’ve dealt with at the bike shop over the years make me smile in appreciation, shake my head in amazement, laugh until I cry, and also remember that some stories should probably never be written down, or blogged.
The good stories far outnumber the bad ones, and the funny ones are the best of the bunch. Don’t think this blog will only be made up of old stories, though. The bicycle industry changes every day, and I’ll try to occasionally add my perspective on those changes. Other stuff could appear here, too. This could be better than “Letters to the Editor”, or the comments section on a news site. I doubt it, but I’ll just have to see how it evolves. I’m open to suggestions, too, but please get them to me by some kind of anonymous method, in case I choose to ignore them.
Many thanks to Melissa from Slamdot for getting this site up and running. She’s been more than patient with me, and hasn’t cussed me to my face so far. I don’t follow her instructions very well, but she’s pretty good at what she does.
I’m kicking and screaming at the thought of being dragged into the 21st century, but my resolve has weakened far enough that you’re now reading this on your screen. Under the “Never say Never” category, here we go.
Thanks for being here,
Bill
